17th cent. Rhineland German Wood Carving

17th century, German, Rhineland area, walnut wood carving of a saint/martyr; possibly depicting the agony of Saint Sebastian; Commonly invoked at that time against plague and disease. Carvings of Saint Sebastian often adorned peoples homes to protect homes and families from the ravages of the "black death" in the Middle Ages and afterwards. This old and rare plaque measures 7 inches wide by 9 1/2 inches long by 1 3/4 thick and has a beautifully aged patina which cannot be otherwise reproduced. The walnut wood of the carving has some minimal, yet authentic worm damage. Other damage to the carving is limited to a small chip on the cherubin's nose and knee; and a small missing branch on the tree above; else this magnificent piece is in very good condition. Provenance: Private Collection.
